What’s Your Dream

“What’s your dream? What’s your dream? Everybody gotta have a dream!” In “Pretty Woman,” a man walks down the street randomly asking, “What’s your dream?”

What's your dream image floating in clouds

So, tell me, what is your dream? By that, I mean, as you look down that long road to your future, what does it look like? If you could be anything, do anything, have anything, what does that entail, without money being a prerequisite?

Now, let’s Get Practical!

If this wishing method, with no other action, has not worked, yet you make it your New Year’s resolution annually, it amounts to the phrase “Insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over, expecting different results.” If you want different results, and I believe you do, or you would not keep wishing for a better future. A better, well-planned approach is needed here.

I know we all had a dream when we were kids. We all dreamed of what we wanted to be when we grew up. What type of house would we live in, and in what part of the country would our house be located? And those dreams included us growing up to be a doctor, a lawyer, an Indian chief, a ballerina, a princess, a mother, and a president. That list is as long as the number of kids who said, “I have a dream.”

Eras Impact Dreams

I grew up in the early 50s and 60s. I was expected to fulfill my parents’ expectations of what I was to become as an adult. My mother said I needed to study to become a secretary because wherever I moved, there was always a need for one. My father told me my whole life that he knew what I would be when I grew up. When asked, he said being born a female, I would only be a wife and mother!

That does not leave a lot of room for stretching your imagination.

As I grew older, I began developing ten-feet-tall-and-bullet-proof dreams about my future. Mostly around sewing and designing clothing since I started sewing and designing doll clothes at age 5. Those dreams were sidelined and ground into the dirt as life, more often than not, has a way of doing.

So, I’ll ask you, what is your dream? And by that, I mean, what are your dreams for the future? Was the last time you visited those dreams when you were a kid? Have you put it on a shelf and thought someday, as you did so? If you do think about it occasionally, does it take place somewhere off in the distant future? Or does it take place soon? Is it for activities you want to do now, or after your retirement?

Speaking of a retirement dream, how are You Preparing?

New Year’s is when we have the latest dream for the newest year. Is this dream new, or is it the same one you have had year after year? Have you made out your plan for the things you want to accomplish this year? Or are you still just wishing on a star again?

How much serious thought have you given to what you want your future to become? Do you think “It would be nice if…”? Do you think your dream is one that you deserve? If that is what you think, you are correct! A shocking response, isn’t it? Here is the nitty-gritty fact: what you think, say, and believe is what becomes reality.

Have I painted a dismal picture? Perhaps. Is it a glimpse of a possible reality? Possibly!

So, what is your alternative? You can’t work two jobs. And your wife may already be working. You aren’t going to win the lottery. Not with those odds! Plus, you, like so many of us, aren’t going to inherit a fortune from the family. Do you give up? Do you forget about what your dream is altogether? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Now, let’s get practical!

If this wishing method, with no other action, has not worked, it equates to the phrase “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.” If you want different results, and I believe you do, or you would not keep wishing for a better future. A better, well-planned approach is needed here.

Dreams are vital! So, what is your alternative? You can’t work two jobs. And your wife may already be working. You aren’t going to win the lottery. Not with those odds! Plus, you, like so many of us, aren’t going to inherit a fortune from the family. Do you give up? Do you forget about what your dream is altogether?

Baby feet held by a mother's hands.

Let me ask you again, are you ready to make your dreams come true? It is not as daunting as you may think. As you look down that long road from where you are in life right now to where you want to be, keep in mind that a journey of one thousand miles begins with one step! And you can accomplish it with one baby step at a time.

Remember your Childhood Dreams

Think back to your childhood and the grandiose dreams and ideas you had of yourself as an adult.

What happened to them? What happened that they became sidelined, put on the back burner for later, or forgotten completely? How have we gone from being ten-feet-tall and bulletproof to just going through life on autopilot? How many times have you thought it is too late for my life to be any different?

If you think that, you are right. If you want it to be different, you have to believe that it is not too late. You have to want your life to become at least part of the grandiose dream you had for yourself as a kid. Believe me, it is doable.

Change a New Year’s Dream into a Goal!

New Year's Dream

I have a great imagination and can imagine all sorts of scenarios (albeit not they were not written down) of how my life would be if one dream came to fruition. But I never gave up on dreaming or wishing. Disappointingly, none of those scenarios ever came true.

Then a friend told me a scenario, which, by definition, is a written outline; a setting, in particular, for a work. She told me what was missing in me, simply having a New Year’s dream.

That friend explained that to bring my dreams and wishes into reality, I had to write them down in detail and say them aloud: Proudly and loudly speak them to the universe. She called it Manifesting. Then I needed to figure out what baby steps to take to bring my dreams into reality.

A Daunting Idea, YES! Impossible, NO!

According to Audrey Hepburn, there is no such thing as IMPOSSIBLE. She says, “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, ‘I’m possible!” Interesting concept! Just changing how we look at that word changes our perspective, opens up our minds. And moves an impossible situation into the doable category!

I didn’t know where to start;

What steps should I take to get from point A to ultimately living my new year’s dream? Should I

  • Go to the library for books on the subject?
  • Go online and search for the information?
  • Ask my friends?

My head was swimming with doubt and confusion.

How do I start? How long would it take? What if I failed? Where would I find the answers to the innumerable questions rolling around in my head? Suddenly, it dawned on me that the friend who had led me in this direction would have the answers I needed to know where and how to start. That friend did! And best of all, she was willing to guide me. Step by step, the formula works for every dream you have. And she encouraged me to have more than one dream, always!

I heard a New Year’s toast once. It went like this, “May all your dreams come true but one so you always have something for which to strive!”

Let’s use A New Year’s dream of a newer car as my example. Not too far-fetched since I do want a new car.

  • First: I needed to decide on what brand of car I wanted, including the style, color, and amenities. And one that wouldn’t get me a speeding ticket.
  • Second: Get a picture of the exact car I chose and put it on my wall, where I see it several times a day, every day!
  • Third: Find out the total price of that car and put it in the car’s picture.
  • Fourth (and for me, the hardest): do the math for the dollar amounts for months, weeks, and days.
  • Fifth: Figure out the steps I would have to take to have the money to purchase the car.
  • Sixth: Write down the tips given to you and put them into action every day.
  • Seventh: DON’T GIVE UP! If you falter along the way, pick up where you left off and move forward again.
  • Every step of the way: Don’t forget to breathe! Undertakings like turning a new year’s dream into reality can be daunting and a bit frightening, to say the least. So breathe and do so often. Big, deep, cleansing breaths.

Why Make these Changes?

What I had done in the past, merely trudging along slowly eliminating my debt, wasn’t working. Saving a pittance each payday meant I would not have that new car before the next millennium or later! I did not want to wait that long. A New Year’s dream of a new car was looking farther and farther away. This is where I realized I needed to rethink my money-making options. I knew that, having been retired for a decade, I couldn’t reenter the standard workforce, working for some company or other. I began researching, investigating, and comparing down-to-earth sustainable options to make a decision.

And I did. Months earlier, I had saved an ad to post online from home. It sounded rather simple, especially since they would show me step-by-step how to do everything I needed to know to be a success, the online stuff. And I could do it FROM HOME! Now, that is a long-time New Year’s dream come true. I often wished for a “job” where I could get paid to stay home, and I just turned that into reality.

If your New Year’s dreams have not come true for you year after year, perhaps, like me, you have not taken the steps necessary to make them come true.

Here are a few easy What’s your dream steps for you to take now to start making your New Year’s dreams a reality
