Throughout my academic career, my father moved us around the country. . . , often. By the time I was in the second grade, I had attended 5 different schools. One of the second-grade teachers asked me to read a passage. When I came to a word I did not know, she humiliated me in front of the class. I was mortified. And terrified of making a mistake in class. From that day forward, I hardly ever read anything especially if I had to do so in front of anyone else.
Years later, my two-year-old son begged me to read to him as his grandparents had done every day of his life. Since they had moved, one day I finally relented. Had I thought about the fact that Dr. Seuss books were read to him so often he knew them by heart to the point he knew when to turn the page, I would never have read to him that first day. And I would not know how to read beyond that second-grade level to this day.
