A good night’s sleep is something we all desire and need for our survival. Mankind has battled this predicament for millennia to no avail.
“…to sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there’s the rub, For in that sleep of death, what dreams may come…” a quote from Hamlet by Shakespeare. In other words, even Hamlet wanted a good night’s sleep and failed to obtain it.
I understand Hamlet’s sentiments. Remarkably, the perchance to dream part really is the rub. Meanwhile, dreams become NIGHTMARES! For years, I have had unkind, unwanted dead relatives haunting my dreams in weird, disturbing, even horrific scenarios. Nonetheless, do not want to consult a dream analyst to find out what those nightmarish dreams mean. Nor do I want those Ghouls invading my sleep.
A good night’s sleep, undeniable, is an issue that has plagued mankind back to the Stone Age. It is safe to say no records go that far back. However, I cannot imagine how anyone could get a good night’s sleep lying on a rock-strewn cave floor with the wind howling through the open cave entrance. And I cannot imagine that piling up leafy branches and grasses and fur-covered animal hides helped all that much. So, undoubtedly, mankind has been looking for a more enclosed and more comfortable object upon which to sleep.
Some people, battling the sleepless night issue, have turned to man-made, chemical supplements to induce a catatonic sleep state. They may have slept all night long, but was it a good night’s sleep? If you wake up the next morning feeling like you were on a bender the night before and your mouth is as dry as concrete with your lip stuck to your teeth while holding your head onto your shoulders, it is safe to say you did not get a good night’s sleep.
