Change can be scary when something comes along with which people are unfamiliar, they tend to balk at the prospect of investing in it out of fear. However, they will invest in popular name-brand companies for the mere reason of familiarity. Fear is a great hindrance to progress, in improving our lives.
For example; electricity. My great-grandfather refused to have it installed in his house. He thought it was unsafe, that it was a fad that would soon die out and go away. The automobile is another example of popular resistance by the masses. When the automobile first appeared on the market, they were called velocipedes. Funny name that, thankfully, faded away for the current term; automobile.
Air flight is another invention that the public resisted. More recently shopping malls than the big box stores as they are commonly called. Some of those mega-stores require you to pay a membership fee. This is so you can take advantage of the merchandise they sell at huge savings to minimal discounts. Most of us are grateful for the opportunity to PAY that membership fee for those savings. It gives us status. We are doing what a segment of the population can’t afford.
