Is College Worth It? I guess that depends on what you want your future to become. And the debt you’re racking up in the process.
How many years do you want to work to pay off that debt? All the time you work at a career which, in reality, fills the pockets of someone else with countless Ben Franklins and Grover Cleveland’s ($1,000 bill). For far too long, the first couple of years in college, students spent more time in frat parties, drinking contests, and general foolishness. What time they did spend in class, their ability to learn was hampered by hangovers and lack of sleep. Plus, not having done assignments.
Sadly, and often, the parents were paying for this tomfoolery. Some of the most expensive parties on the planet! And a year’s tuition isn’t getting any cheaper. However, academic success rates are going in the opposite direction. Plus, the average college graduate finds it increasingly difficult to secure a job in their field of study after graduation. And I don’t mean the subject of college partying.

Is College Worth It?

The IMD World Competitiveness Center reports that the US ranked 10th in its 2020 Competitiveness Report.
In 1990, the US ranked sixth in the world in health and education. Now it ranks 27th. That is quite a significant drop. Just think, folks, these graduates will one day be running this country and deciding our futures. Scary!
Absurdly, the US is reported to have the best-surveyed education system on the planet according to the Best Countries Report. But according to Business Insider, in 2018, the US ranked 38th in math and 24th in science. According to another report by the Global Citizens for Human Rights, the US didn’t even rank in the top ten for countries with the best educational systems.
Clearly, college is not making Students Smarter.
More statistics
- 45 percent of students did not demonstrate any significant improvement in learning over the first two years of college. Close to 40 percent didn’t learn anything at all over all four years.
- 35 percent of the students questioned reported studying less than 5 hours a week.
- 2.67 hours a day was the average number of hours applied to studying; however, they applied twice that much time to partying, shopping, and eating.
- Consistent increase in Adult illiteracy. Most College Grads fall below average in Cognitive Tasks. (Such as calculating the costs of foods in a Grocery Store).
- College Grads in the US test at or less than High School kids in several other Countries.
- Top Universities are declining in academic rigor.
- One study involved 470,000 fifteen-year-old students. They were given tests comparable to the SAT or ACT exams. After the scores were compiled to determine each country’s average score for three subjects. Those subjects were math, science, and reading. Based on the score results, China received the highest scores. Korea followed next. Then Finland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and the Netherlands. I don’t see the USA on this list!
I think this is a pretty good indication that our current educational system IS NOT WORKING for our students.
Can someone explain why we are still sending these institutions Billion of Tax dollars? Private business would have had its doors closed and the owners indicted for fraud. Somehow, the IRS would get involved.
So, is there an answer?
I doubt the answer is for parents to keep pouring tens of thousands of dollars more of their hard-earned money into the sinking tuition abyss.
